Types of Spanner Wrenches for Hydraulic Cylinders

There are three main types of spanner wrenches that are used commonly on hydraulic cylinders. The images below will show you what the gland of the cylinder will look like and the suggested spanner wrench to choose.

Head-Hook Spanner Wrench

This type of wrench is used mainly on glands that have notches along the rim. You can find them commonly on Caterpillar and John Deere machines. The end of the wrench has a hook that fits inside the notch of the gland.

To determine what size of wrench you will need, measure the diameter of the gland where the notches are. Our head-hook spanner wrenches are adjustable within a certain range of sizes.

Face-Pin Spanner Wrench

Face-Pin spanner wrenches are used on glands with holes on the face of the gland where the chrome rod extends out. There can be 2 or more holes on the face. You can find this type of gland commonly on Case or Bobcat machines. The wrench requires a 1/2" or 3/4" socket wrench to use and has reversible pins for various hole sizes.

To determine what size of wrench you will need, measure the hole to hole diameter. Our face-pin spanner wrenches are adjustable within certain pin to pin diameters.

Head-Pin Spanner Wrench

Head-Pin spanner wrenches are used on glands with holes along the rim of the gland where the chrome rod extends out. There can be 2 or more holes on the rim. You can find this type of gland commonly on Bobcat and other machines. The wrench has a fixed diameter pin welded on the end of an adjustable head.

To determine what size of wrench you will need, measure the diameter of the gland and the hole size. Our head-pin spanner wrenches are adjustable within certain gland diameters.
